At CAROLINE HASLETT PRIMARY SCHOOL we believe in giving every child the opportunity to reach her/his full potential in all areas of their development. We do our best to meet the needs of children within a mainstream setting.
The general aims of Caroline Haslett School underpin all polices within the school. The aims of the school are:
- to enable children to communicate effectively
- to encourage the development of lively, enquiring minds
- to promote the development of each child’s social, emotional, physical and intellectual capacities
- to meet individual children’s needs so that they may make a fulfilling and useful contribution in adult life.
All children are entitled to have full access to all elements of the school curriculum, in which the majority of pupils can participate as independent learners, promoting personal development and preparing them for adult life. Age, gender, race, creed or individual needs do not constrain any educational entitlement.
Independence, self-advocacy, respect for others and the development and maintenance of self-esteem are integral to educational entitlement. Caroline Haslett School believes that by pursuing an inclusive approach to learning and providing a happy, sensitive and secure environment enables the school to fulfil these objectives.
Central to our approach to teaching and learning is the notion of success. We therefore place great emphasis in enabling children to identify and feel proud of successes that they make both in school and in wider activities.
Provision for children with special educational needs is a matter for the school as a whole. This whole school approach to special educational needs means that every member of staff takes responsibility for every pupil that they teach. The headteacher together with, the special educational needs co-ordinator, key teachers identified in each teaching team and the governing body will provide advice, guidance and support where necessary. Teaching such children is a whole school responsibility.

Children who have poor short term memory, can't hold more than a couple of things in their head, forget instructions of more than 3 parts, find spelling tricky, reverse digits in 2/3 digit numbers.

Sarah Prior is the Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCo) and Head of the Language Department at Caroline Haslett Primary School.
The Language Department is a designated specialist provision for 5 children who have an Education, Health and Care Plan and whose speech and/or language difficulties are their primary special educational need. All children in the Department come to the Department for specific programmes but, otherwise, are full-time members of their classes, The Department staff are: a speech and language therapist (1 day each week), Mrs Prior and two specialist learning support assistants.
